Guide to Food Allergies

Food allergies is a broad subject that covers any type of intolerance to any type of food and reactions that stem from the intolerance including anything from a basic skin irritation to life threatening conditions. When an allergy occurs the human body mistakes some type of food for a harmful substance and responds to it accordingly. The response can be to a local area such as blistering in the mouth from acidic foods such as berries or tomatoes or the response may be a life threatening condition with swelling of the airways. Knowing about food allergies can prevent complications and serious conditions.

Common Food Allergies

Any food can be the cause of an allergic reaction but there are some foods that are more commonly associated with allergies. Foods such as milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish are all common food allergies. Peanuts and shellfish are known to cause life threatening reactions and need to be taken very seriously. Other foods can also cause severe problems and a person should consult a doctor to discuss the nature of their allergies.

Dealing With Food Allergies

There are effective ways to deal with food allergies and still have a healthy, well balanced diet. Keeping the necessary nutrients in ones diet is important for basic body functioning. With some foods such as milk and eggs the food industry has developed substitute products which allow the person to get similar food to the ones they are allergic to. Soy milk or goat’s milk is often substituted for cow milk allergies and there are now great egg substitutes on the market. If a person is allergic to wheat products they can substitute rice and other grains into their diet. All these substitutes will help to keep a balance diet and will allow the person variety in there diet.

Common Symptoms Of Food Allergies

Sometimes a person has health problems and they do not even know they have food allergies that are causing the problems. Common symptoms of food allergies are hives, itching, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, difficulty swallowing, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing. In recent years many allergist have also found that people may have migraine headaches associated with certain foods they eat. Some of these symptoms can be life threatening. With a severe food allergy a person may have a reaction and possibly die within a matter of minutes. This not that common but does need to addressed because at any point in life a person may develop a severe food allergy.
