Latex Allergies Can Be Life-Threatening

Balloons may seem very harmless, and for most people these are harmless. People with latex allergies have to avoid balloons because for them balloons are not harmless. There are some other every day items which also contain latex and cause an allergic reaction. Latex allergies can be very troublesome because there are many every day items that contain latex. Latex allergies symptoms are a reaction to rubber latex which is a natural substance that is extracted from rubber trees. Latex is used to make other items besides balloons including rubber toys, rubber bands, condoms, pacifiers and diapers.

Anyone working in the health care industry may have a very difficult time if they have latex allergies for there are many pieces of medical equipment made with this substance. Items that may cause a reaction in those with latex allergies are the rubber gloves used for many medical examinations and procedures. Other items used in healthcare work that contain latex include padding for root canals, catheters and tourniquets. Healthcare workers with latex allergies have to make sure that supplies without latex are used for the work that they do. All of these items are also made without latex so healthcare workers can avoid a negative reaction.

People With Latex Allergies Exhibit Uncomfortable Symptoms

The symptoms of latex allergies are similar to many other allergies. People with these allergies exhibit these symptoms when they come into contact with latex. The symptoms include coughing, sneezing, rash, hives, shortness of breath and shock. People with latex allergies can have a fatal reaction the first time they come into contact with latex or at any other time. When a person has a reaction to latex, he or she should consult with a doctor immediately. A blood test can confirm an allergic reaction to latex.

A person with a latex allergy should be most careful about coming into contact with anything containing latex. These people should also carry or wear information that states they are allergic to latex. This information should constantly be with each person who has latex allergies. These allergies are particularly troublesome because many products are made with latex. This allergy can be particularly difficult for children who go to school where other children may show up with a usually harmless article like a balloon. These allergies are also very difficult for those who work in the healthcare field. There are support groups for people affected by these allergies, and these groups offer many strategies for coping with this problem.
